What can I say about my life as a Chubby Mummy?
For starters, I’m a 37-year old chunky chick living in a small town just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin. I met my Very British Husband in October, 2001. He came to America on a job assignment; and over the course of his employment, we fell madly in love.
We got engaged in December of 2001 in a lovely hotel suite overlooking Niagara Falls (on the Canada side, eh) and married in Saint Lucia in May of 2002.
We started trying for a family as soon as he pushed the engagement ring down my finger. And we kept trying and trying and trying. Everything from washing our underwear together to doing a headstand after sex to expensive infertility procedures.
In 2003, my family doctor referred me to the most inept gynecologist on the face of the earth. He took one look at all 200+ pounds of me, and diagnosed me with PCOS. Without running so much as a blood test. In 2004, I started bleeding every day. He prescribed birth control pills, even though he knew we wanted to start a family. He finally did one pap test, took a biopsy of my cervix, and told me to lose weight by eating sawdust. Yes, I am serious.
By January of 2006, I was depressed and tired of bleeding all the time. I knew something was wrong with me, and my doctor was unwilling to help me. I called a different gynecologist, and the rest, as they say, is history.
My new gynecologist (now referred to as “The Gynie God”) immediately scheduled a transvaginal ultrasound, which turned up an endometrial cyst wrapped around my left ovary. It was the size of a large orange.
In April of 2006, I had surgery to remove the cyst, and lost my ovary. I also had a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG), which cleaned out my remaining tube.
I’ve done three rounds of Clomid and three cycles of Femara. Neither one worked.
I’ve started and stopped Weight Watchers more times than I can count. Tracking points gives me food OCD, and turns me into a raging lunatic. Of course, the fact that I can eat an entire sleeve of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies in one sitting has nothing to do with my dieting failures.
I’ve peed on hundreds of Clearblue fertility sticks. I’ve read Taking Charge of Your Fertility so many times, I could probably recite chapters 1-6 verbatim. I’ve prayed. I’ve hoped and dreamed. And I’ve made countless wishes on stars and pennies in fountains.
And on January 2nd, 2008, I got my first positive pregnancy test. This blog was created to help me track everything about this surprising and wonderful turn of events.
