Random Musings + Resolutions.

Filed under: Life — Kriss @ 9:18 pm

Why can’t anyone make a toilet bowl brush that doesn’t rust??? Cleaning the toilet is icky enough, without using a rusted up brush to scrub under the bowl. I can’t use the handy dandy disposable ones, because we live in the sticks & I’m scared the pads would wreck our septic system. If I can’t put eggs or raw chicken or potato peelings down the disposal, I would bet those little cleaning heads aren’t safe, either.

How does infant clothing correspond to a baby’s age? For example, should my 4-month-old son be in 3-6 month clothes? My aunt & I had a huge disagreement about this on Christmas. I thought their size should correspond to their age; but she thinks their size should be double their age, and Mason should be ready to move into 9 month clothes.

I’ve been working on a reflection post to wrap up 2008; but every time I sit down to write it, I start tearing up. It was a whirlwind year to say the least, and I still can’t believe it all really happened.

Does anyone else make resolutions for the new year? I usually don’t; but I’m breaking my non-tradition to write down a few goals for 2009.

Resolution #1. I will lose 100 pounds over the course of the year. I decided to give Weight Watchers another try, and will reevaluate my progress after 3 months. At that time, I’ll decide if I should continue with WW or switch over to South Beach. I really want to try South Beach; but I’m going to be under a tremendous amount of stress in the next 3 months. The Husband will be in Texas for 2 weeks in January; in England for 3 weeks in February/March; and in Utah for 3 weeks in early April. I’m familiar with the WW program; and I don’t think I should add any more upheaval to my life while he’s gone.

Does anybody want to join me? I ordered the WW at home program today, and I’m more than happy to share information. I’ll probably start another blog to share recipes & whatnot, and will update once I get it all sorted out (hopefully over the weekend).

Resolution #2. I will start keeping a hand-written journal of letters to Mason.  I’ve read some of the monthly newsletters other bloggers do for their children; and I think they’re a great idea, but I want him to have something more personal and private.  And I found these great journals on Amazon for $13.89.  I only hope he appreciates it when he’s an adult and has children of his own.

journalResolution #3. I will get back into photography.  I’ve gotten lazy and lost my creative drive, and I’ve let an overwhelming sense of self-doubt creep back into my life.  I look at the pictures I’ve taken and think they’re not good enough; that they’ll never be good enough; and I want to throw my camera to the bottom of Lake Michigan.  It goes hand in hand with the self-loathing from gaining all this pregnancy weight, and feeling like nothing I do is ever good enough.

Resolution #4. I will faithfully clip coupons and do everything in my power to lead a more thrifty life.  And cut out the unnecessary purchases, like magazine subscriptions and luxury bed linens.  This unstable economy scares the bejesus out of me, to the point I don’t sleep at night because jobs are being cut every, single day and we’re in debt up to our eyeballs.

What do you do to save money?  I already get my hair cut at Fantastic Sam’s, rather than a higher-priced salon.  I color my own hair, which saves about $30 each month.  I use super cheap Dial soap, rather than the expensive shower gels from Bath & Body Works.  I hang laundry out to dry when the weather is nice (except for towels – I can’t stand the stiffness from line-dried towels).  I shop at garage sales and the seasonal farmer’s market.  I buy generic or store brand whenever possible.  And still, I feel like I’m missing some obvious penny pinching ideas.

And with that, I’m off to bed to try & sleep off this wicked headache.

  1. I’ve never heard that double the age crap. I think your aunt is nuts!!! Certainly not all children correspond to the given weight and size timeframe, but it’s a general idea! Weirdo!

I’m away from home so I haven’t given resolutions a real thought. However, mine are the same as every year…weight loss and organization!

PS, love the idea for the book for Mason. I’m sure he (and you) will appreciate it!

  2. Ev fits his 3 month clothing..just! He’s most comfy in the 3-6 month stuff but I had him in a 9 month outfit he got for Christmas when he peed out of the one he was in and I hadn’t brought an extra with me..it fit from neck to crotch but the limbs were too long and the body was baggy!

We almost never see new movies as a money saving thing. When we lived in Baltimore we could go to the Drive-In and see 3 movies for the price of one. We did that. Otherwise we don’t go to the theater. We also don’t rent from Blockbuster or any of those chains, we get them through our library because there’s no charge unless you return it late. :D And we cut each other’s hair, but I suspect you couldn’t do that because your hair is so full of curl and body. Mine is stick straight so he just has to make an even line and even then I get him started. Something else we do is buy in family sizes for meat and then when we get home we split them up into individual portions – or 2 person portions – in ziplock bags and freeze them that way. And we buy whole turkeys, chickens or medium sized hams and I can make a bunch of meals off of it. Cook the whole chicken how you like, save the juice/fat for making soups some other time, have two days of leftovers then freeze the remainder to make soup with – or make the soup and then freeze that. I generally make Slippery Pot Pie with leftover ham. OH..and a biggie…avoid children’s departments like the plague because it’s hard to not buy the babies something they don’t really have to have since it’s all so darned cute.

  3. I keep a hand-written journal for my son, generally writing him one letter a month. I don’t know how long I will keep it up for but it’s been fun so far.

Children’s size clothes – generally I’ve dressed my son in one size up clothing -= so when he was 4 months I was getting him 6-9 month things because he was a tall boy and I was told it was healthier for boys to be in loose bodysuits so that their testicles don’t get affected or some such.

Good luck with the resolutions and all the best in 2009.

  4. I would be interested in your weight watchers blog. I always join online but then cancel it a month or so later.

  5. Whatever fits the child is the size he should wear. It’s scientific like that. :)
(My 4 month old is wearing 6-9 month clothing right now but he’s in the 99th percentile for height.)

I’d follow your WW blog. I think I’m going to hit the CORE plan on my own in the New Year to lose a bit.

I love your journal idea. Although you could just print out your blog posts and paste them into a scrapbook to save time, eh? ;P

  6. Happy New Year! And best of luck on your resolutions. I am right with you on several of your ideas. I have pondered weight watchers but there is no way I could go to meetings. I think I suffer fat phobia–the thought of weighing and discussing weight loss with ppl sends me into a panic! Crazy huh since we are all there for support but I just cant bring myself to do it. The journal for Mason is a wonderful idea! Trust me since losing my Mother every momento, every essence of her no matter what, is a treasure to me. I also have decided to be more frugal-I have found several money saving tips and forums but there is only so much frugality I can handle and only so much I am willing to give up. I dont consider disposable “womens products” as a luxury! LOL! Thankfully since my hysterectomy I am no longer wasting my money each month. I have checked out many sites to become debt free and still cant manage to make a budget but I am trying;) So, good luck and may the new year bring you much happiness:)

  7. Happy New Year, my friend!!! I hope 2009 is a great year for both of us.

Guess who rejoined WW today? Yea…we can be WW buddies again. It’s hard to believe that we met a year and a half ago through a WW post!?!?! And here we are again doing WW. We can do it this time, I just know it! And no obsessing over points and food, you hear me?!?!? ;)

  8. Our biggest expenses are wine and eating out, so that’s where I try to focus when it’s time to save. But then I’m cheap just about everywhere else already, and I know how much I spend (put it all on Discover [pay it all off every month!!!] and review it frequently, plus I have kept a budget in an Excel file for years), so I have a good idea where to concentrate. Sometimes the hardest part is just knowing where you spend, so take time to track it! Then you can take action.

PastaQueen had a post about being frugal and had like a hundred comments w/ppl’s ideas… you might want to check those out!
